In our Talking Tots classes we have story time at the close of the sessions. For us, this activity isn't just about listening to a story ... our storytime is very interactive. We always include a repetitive tag line that the children can chant with us.
We were thrilled when Craig from Clickety Books introduced us to his fabulous range of books.
Clickety Books have been created from a linguistic point of view and feature fun characters such as Lucky the Plucky Duck, Erica the Picky Chicken and Cork the Squaky Hawk.
They are clear to read and beautifully illustrated and are complemented by an audio CD which is narrated with Rik Mayall's unique voice.
The books make use of rhyme, repetition of words, phrases, sentences and refrains which allow children to make predictions or guesses about words, phrases, sentences that could come next in the story.
Each story has been designed to give children repeated, intense exposure to a particular sound sequence (ie ‘rime’), eg ‘ack’. This gives a fabulous opportunity to help children to develop their speech sound system.
The stories often use words that children don’t hear in everyday speech, so they learn new vocabulary and love to hear and play with unusual words.
As Speech & Language Therapists we could instantly see the benefits that this set of books could bring to a child with speech sound difficulties. What blew us away was the reaction of the children in our Sparklers (3 – 5 year olds) class who generally don’t have speech & language difficulties. They howled with laughter at the funny antics of the characters, the wacky humour and most of all … they loved joining in the repetitive chants (at the top of their voices!).
There are currently 5 books in the series and we would recommend them for children 3 years and up. Each individual book is £7.99 and the boxset of 5 is £31.96.
We know that Craig has big plans … we look forward to more!
