This week marks National Storytelling Week. It’s the twelfth such annual event run by the Society for Storytelling which has Lottery Funding via Arts Council England. Storytelling is theatre in miniature. It requires eye contact, gesture, imagination and expressive language.
Narrative ability is about telling stories or describing events in a comprehensible way.
The skills involved include:
. Being able to identify the key people and actions in an event
. Starting and finishing the 'story'
. Recounting them in the order in which they occurred
. Including key events and not including irrelevant details
Narrative skills are also dependent on specific ‘time’ vocabulary, such as yesterday, before, next etc ...
and the ability to use past, present & future tense constructions in sentences.
